What Makes Us Pure

100% AIR CHILLED

While countless safety steps ensure only the best buying, cooking, and eating experience, we believe 100% air chilled is a big one. That’s because our whole chicken meat is cooled using frigid, circulating, purified air (versus chemical-based water used by most providers), on its two-mile-long journey in our chilling room.

You’ll quickly notice the 100% air chilled difference:

  • Clean looking chicken products on the store shelf—no chicken sitting in pinkish water, in the package.
  • Dry-to-the-touch raw chicken when prepping—no wet, slimy feel.
  • Pure chicken that’s ready to absorb your favorite seasonings and marinades—no excess water to dilute the flavors.
  • Crispier, golden skin when roasted, grilled, and seared.
  • Tender, moist, and flavorful chicken in every bite—no question what chicken’s supposed to taste like.

Equally important, you’ll find extraordinary value with Pure Prairie Poultry’s 100% air chilled chicken, since you’ll pay chicken prices for chicken—not for the added weight of retained water.

VEGETARIAN FED

Our belief is that pure, quality chicken starts with pure, quality ingredients. Much like eating healthier food impacts our own health and sense of well-being, we believe it’s the same for chickens.

Our nutritious blend of vegetable- and grain-based feed ingredients helps us best control the balance of crucial macronutrients that promote overall health:

  • Protein for lean muscle development from locally sourced soybeans.
  • Carbohydrates for energy from locally sourced corn.
  • Healthy fats to absorb fat-soluble vitamins from feed, sourced from vegetable oil, which also makes feed more appetizing for chickens.

While the use of animal byproducts for protein and fat sources makes feeding chickens cheaper, we say NO to animal byproducts, and YES to only the highest quality chicken for you and your family.

NO ANTIBIOTICS EVER

The most effective ways to avoid antibiotic use in our chicken flocks are to work closely with our family farmers to keep chickens healthy, and to provide:

  • A clean barn environment, including proper temperature, air, and litter quality control.
  • Practice strict biosecurity practices.
  • Provide 24/7 access to nutritious feed and filtered water, delivered through sanitary water lines.

While the U.S. Food & Drug Administration requires the removal of medicines, including antibiotics, well in advance of harvesting chickens for market, we recognize that consumers have concerns about the use of antibiotics; and, as a society, we need to preserve the long-term efficacy of these tools, both for animals and people.

For this reason, we have made the decision to provide the gold standard around this issue for our Pure Prairie Poultry® chicken brand: No Antibiotics Ever.

This means chickens raised for these products have never, ever been given antibiotics, from egg to harvest.

If, however, chicken flocks need to be treated with antibiotics due to illness, these flocks will be treated and sold under a different label without the claim. This approach assures our consumers that the products they are buying are labeled correctly, and the chickens are treated responsibly and humanely.

RECYCLABLE PACKAGING

At Pure Prairie Poultry, we are committed to continuously improving our environmental stewardship, which includes more recyclable packaging.

Our goal: to maintain the safety and wholesomeness of the chicken inside packages while minimizing the impact to our environment.

To achieve this, Pure Prairie Poultry brand chicken products come in #1 PET plastic trays. While single use plastic isn’t always recyclable, #1 PET plastic trays are more recyclable* than trays made from higher PET numbers (found in the middle of the chasing arrows on plastic packages) or Styrofoam trays.

What this means is that #1 PET plastic trays are more likely to be “downcycled,” or broken down into smaller plastic shards and used for other products. Examples of these products include pillow stuffing, fleece, and carpeting.

Additionally, all Pure Prairie Poultry corrugated packaging suppliers are part of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, an independent, nonprofit organization that focuses on sustainably managed forests.

*To protect the integrity of all recyclable items in your area, it’s important to check with your local recycling center to make sure they take, and recycle, #1 PET plastic trays before adding them to your recycling bin.

FAQs

After chickens are initially harvested and processed, chicken meat must be cooled quickly and thoroughly to maintain food safety and wholesomeness. There are two methods of doing this: the water chilled method, which uses a chemical-based water solution bath, or air chilled, which is the method used by Pure Prairie Poultry. With this method, whole chicken meat is cooled using frigid, circulating, purified air on its two-mile-long journey in our chilling room.

While both methods effectively chill chicken for food safety, Pure Prairie Poultry uses state-of-the-art technology and a specialized process to air-chill chicken, which improves appearance, and the touching, prepping, cooking, and eating experience.

You’ll quickly notice the 100% air-chilled difference:

  • Clean looking chicken products on-shelf—no chicken sitting in pinkish water, in the package.
  • Dry-to-the-touch raw chicken when prepping—no wet, slimy feel.
  • Pure chicken that’s ready to absorb your favorite seasonings and marinades—no excess water to dilute the flavors.

“No Antibiotics Ever” means antibiotics have never, ever, been used at any point in the chickens’ lives, including in the shell (before hatched), and during the time they are raised, with care, on the farm.

While the U.S. Food & Drug Administration requires a withdrawal period for all medicines, including antibiotics, well before processing to ensure no antibiotic residue is found in chicken meat, we recognize that consumers—and society—have concerns about antibiotic overuse. To do our part, we are committed to using “No Antibiotics Ever” practices with chicken sold under the Pure Prairie brand name.

If, however, chicken flocks need to be treated with antibiotics due to illness, these flocks will be treated and sold under a different label without the claim. This approach assures our consumers that the products they are buying are labeled correctly, and the chickens are treated responsibly and humanely.

Yes! Rest assured, all Pure Prairie Poultry chicken products come from chicken flocks that have been hatched, raised, and packaged in the Upper Midwest of the United States.

No. Chickens are 100 percent bred and raised on independently owned family farms in the Midwest, by our farmer partners. These contracted farmer partners are shareholders in the company and have a vested interest in the quality and success of Pure Prairie Poultry.

Yes! The overwhelming majority of chickens raised for meat (versus table eggs) in the United States are raised in a cage free environment. Chickens are free to roam the barn and have 24/7 access to nutritious feed and water.

Neither. Chickens raised for Pure Prairie Poultry are raised in a cage-free, climate-controlled, barn environment, for protection against viruses carried by wild birds, predators, and inclement weather. Chickens are free to roam the barn and have 24/7 access to nutritious feed and water.

Especially because our chickens are raised in the Upper Midwest where summers are hot and winters are bitterly cold, we use air flow, temperature, and humidity control to keep the barn environment consistent and comfortable for developing chickens.

Yes, Pure Prairie Poultry has a unique type of arrangement with its farmer partners. While most of the industry enters into a general supplier-provider type arrangement, farmer partners for Pure Prairie Poultry each have an ownership stake in the company.
